The Robin

Robin! Robin! On limb and in the heavens,
Kindest of all my fair-feathered brethren:
Take this song on your forthcoming flight
And with it make distressed trees delight!

Sing robin, sing! On branch and on high,
For the best of friends are hardly nearby,
So sing louder still, and awaken my soul
Remind me that without Love I'm not whole.

Sweet robin, sweet, with melody teach me,
That all art is obsolete, and all wisdom folly,
If I live for my own health, wealth and ease,
I will die deprived life's best offerings.

Kindred robin, show me that which you see
Keeps your heart cheery: hidden beauty.
Yes, remind me that without Love I'm a fool
And my 'lofty aesthetics,' just empty tools.

Fly robin, fly! Show to another your hope!
And take on thy wings this verse that I wrote:
“With Faith I can soar, and with Hope I can sing,
But without Love I am alone, and am nothing.”

Robin bird, blue! Be blessed above all others
For though you haven't a friend to call 'brother,'
You chose to serenade this solitary heart.
Now my soul within me shall arise and depart!
