What is good, ask you?
What is evil, ask I.
Good is the sun shining pleasantly on a new life
Good is the scent of morning dew on grass
Good is the tiny spark of light inside a soul,
which remains young when all else grows old.
Surely not what golden sunlight displays,
is evil.
Surely not what innocent love desires,
is evil.
Surely not anything that remedy’s strife.
no, not evil, say I.
You say I am right,
I say you are wrong.
to think such things
as there being both
intertwined and shades
of gray to cower behind.
I tell you, no truth kept secret for
personal gain—
No righteous effort forsaken and thought
in vain—
No great deception, falsehood, lie
marketed to be true
to you and I
could ever be called “right.”
No innocent life taken for the sake
of convenience—
No war merely waged for the sake of
Allegience—
No empire wrought that was not
Corrupt and built on the back
Of those who were fools
Enough to allow both their
Lives and minds to be ruled.
All this equates to a very great evil.
But subtly you make your reply and
Assure me you’re “right”
And I am wrong;
And that surely I’d steal if I were hungry
And surely I’d lie if death was upon me
And surely I’d rape if no one would know
And I’d sin my hearts content,
if allowed to do so.
Perhaps I would, I cannot say.
What’s hypothetical cannot
count for today. Reason,
however, hold’s one great ideal
to be true:
“Do unto others as you’d
Have them do unto you.”
Word’s spoken by one
Called the Son of Man.
Resonate now like never
Before; “Were these men
greater sinners than you?
I assure you they were not;
Repent lest you too perish.”
Good is the smile of a child in reply to your own
Good is the concerto of space, matter, and time
Good is the small ember of fire inside a soul
That remains warm when all else grows cold.
What is good? say you.
You cannot fathom good,
when you won’t say what’s not.
(Good is as fundamental as an atom,
And universal as the light of a star;
Evil is not the absence thereof, but is
The presence of hubris and deception,
Like a drug: "bind me to addiction,
And send me to an early grave.")
